What will likely be the biggest smash and grab raid of the season was witnessed here tonight. Kendal Town outplayed Marine by a country mile, yet found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-2 score thanks to a couple of freak goals by the visitors. Despite having rained in Kendal for the best part of two days the game started in glorious sunshine with the pitch in immaculate condition. Marine forced an early free kick on the edge of Town's area, but Steve Hussey delivered an embarrassing effort at the Town goal which was dealt with easily. Kendal's first meaningful attack saw Lee Mulvaney shoot over the bar followed by a couple of half chances that fell Town's way but neither were converted. A Marine corner was met with a powerful header from Joe McMahon but Kendal Town 'keeper David Newnes saved well. A great run and shot from Kendal's Craig Hobson went inches wide and Lee Mulvaney shot just over the bar after good hold up play from Craig Hobson. Against the run of play, Marine went ahead 1-0 on 26 minutes as Liam Atherton's miscued strike hit the post and bounced up to hit Peter Cumisky in the face before deflecting into the Town net. Although he looked to be in an offside position the goal was allowed to stand.. Town were behind but were by far the better team at this stage and went close when captain Tony Hallam had a goalbound header deflected wide for a corner. A rare Marine attack nearly caught Town out as Darren Brookfield could have double the visitor's advantage, but his header went just wide. Town immediately responded with Carl Osman putting in a cross that demanded a finish, unfortunately Hobson's effort was wide of the goal. Osman then ran through two Marine defenders to create a goalscoring chance, but a last ditch tackle prevented him getting a shot off. Into the second half and Kendal Town continued to pressure the Marine goal. Alex Taylor tried a lob from 25 yards that only just went over the bar and Lee Mulvaney had a goalbound effort blocked. On 54 minutes Kendal Town's new signing Anthony Murt made his first appearance for Town replacing Craig Hobson. At the other end Kendal give away a penalty for handball as Marine breach our line for the first time in the half. "Goal machine" Peter Cumiskey drives the ball towards the bottom corner, but Newnes makes a brilliant save to keep the game close. Spurred on by the remarkable spot kick save, Kendal Town launch an attack that sees the impressive Alex Taylor play the ball into the path of debutante Anthony Murt and he scores for Town to level on 59 minutes. Murt nearly doubles his tally just moments later, but his shot is just wide. Another great effort from Lee Mulvaney is somehow blocked. Kendal Town are battering Marine at this stage and a home winner looks inevitable. However on 68 minutes a moment of confusion at the back gives Marine a free kick, it looks harmless enough as they have very few players forward, but a sickening loop on the header from Liam Atherton hits the underside of the bar and goes in to put the visitors 1-2 up. Town are straight back at them and could still have got something from the game as Murt and Osman have chances deflected wide but on this night it was not to be as a fortunate Marine headed south with the points. Great debut from Anthony Murt and we look forward to seeing him bag some more for the Town.
