Penrith. Cumbria Women's League

Kendal Wattsfield returned to action by travelling to an under strength Penrith. The match, played almost entirely in the Penrith half of the pitch, started slowly as both teams got used to the conditions and actually playing competitively again. Emma Lifshitz tried to show the way to goal, firing in several shots, but it was a quickly taken free kick to Lauren Downham whose shot from the edge of the box looped over the ‘keeper to open the scoring. Kendal had wasted several good chances, and as half time approached, Brooke Kenny and Nicola Martindale increased their lead with two excellent shots from distance.

Making several changes at half time didn’t seem to upset KW’s pattern of play as they continued to search for more goals. Almost immediately from the restart, Nicola Martindale grabbed her second with another effort from outside the penalty area. Grania Shankley made it five before the hour mark as she placed the ball neatly over the advancing ‘keeper. Whilst Penrith battled on bravely throughout, the numerical disadvantage began to tell and Joanne Thompson helped herself to a last ten minute hat trick to complete the scoring.

Overall a good test for the ladies as they prepare for the Cumbrian Woman’s cup home tie against Crown Newlaithes on Sunday the 31st January
