Information for Visitors to Kendal

Kendal is a market town situated on the edge of the southern edge ofone of the most beautiful parts of the country – the English Lake District.

The town’s unique blend of history, culture and shopping make it a very popular destination for visitors, with attractions for all ages, fascinating museums, art, culture and a variety of leisure facilities. The shopping is diverse with many high street names but the town is known particularly for specialist shops and quality independent traders.

With a total resident population of around 28,000 it is the third largest settlement in Cumbria behind Carlisle and Barrow in size. Historically a part of Westmorland, Kendal today is known largely as a centre for tourism, as the home of Kendal mint cake, and as a producer of pipe tobacco and snuff. Its buildings, mostly constructed with the local grey limestone, have earned it the nickname the 'Auld Grey Town'.
